We invite you to join us on Friday, March 10th at 10:00 am EST for the second lecture in our 75th-anniversary series. Guest speakers Susan Swanson and Dr. Reena George will engage in a historical discussion on “The Legacy of the Scudder Family and Their Passion for Missionary Work”.
“Service to Others” encapsulates how Dr. John Scudder and his wife Harriet approached their community in 1836 when they first arrived in India. Following them, the Scudder family embarked upon pioneering medical mission work, including the founding of CMC Vellore by Dr. Ida S. Scudder. Today, the family keeps their rich history alive through the Scudder Association Foundation and their continued partnership with CMC.
Susan Swanson, a trained historian, is the great-granddaughter of Dr. Silas Scudder, founder of Scudder Memorial Hospital in Ranipet, India. She currently serves on the Board of the Scudder Association Foundation as Chair of Indian Grants. Susan also previously served on the Vellore CMC Foundation Board in the mid-1980s.
After several years as a consultant radiation oncologist in the department started by Dr. Ida B. Scudder at Vellore, Dr. Reena George (Batch ’85) trained in palliative medicine at Oxford with Dr. Robert Twycross. Returning to Vellore, she started the Palliative Care Unit in CMC in 2004, serving there until 2019. She also served as the first editor of the online Indian Journal of Palliative Care. Reena currently heads the Department of Continuing Medical Education and the CMC Archives. Her book, One Step at a Time (Roli Press, 2018) traces the vocational calls, choices, and struggles that led to the birth of the Christian Medical College Vellore.
