IDA S. SCUDDER WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT AWARD RECIPIENT

Executive Director of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and Former US Ambassador For Global Women’s Issues – Melanne Verveer

A tireless advocate for the economic and social advancement of women, Melanne Verveer is the former United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, the current Executive Director of Georgetown University’s Institute for Women, Peace and Security, and the co-founder of Seneca Women. As the first individual to ever hold the position of Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues, Amb. Verveer coordinated foreign policy issues and activities related to the political, economic, and social advancement of women. She also worked to ensure that women’s rights were fully integrated into U.S. foreign policy.

At Georgetown, Ambassador Verveer’s work focuses on the important role women play in preventing conflict, building peace, growing economies, and addressing global threats like climate change and violent extremism. As a founding partner of Seneca Women, Amb. Verveer encourages leading companies and institutions to design, implement, and measure integrated strategies that focus on women and girls, and drive sustainable social and economic results.

Ambassador Verveer is the co-author of the book, “FAST FORWARD: How Women Can Achieve Power and Purpose.”

Dr. J.V. Peter, Director

CMC Vellore Director – John Victor Peter, MD

Dr. J.V. Peter is the director of CMC Vellore, and a professor of Critical Care Medicine. He graduated from CMC with an MBBS in 1982, and he received his M.D. from the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in 1994. He has won several accolades for excellence in his field, including the prestigious Matt Spence and Felicity Hawker medals and the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine Presidential citation in 2017. He was also the recipient of the Thomas Dina Prize in Physiology, Prof. Gault Prize in Pathology, Paul Harrison Prize in Neurology, and the undergraduate research award, among others. 

Dr. J.V. Peter will be recognized for his unparalleled leadership excellence and for his tireless efforts to combat COVID in South India for the past two years.

Lesley Rene Stahl is an American television journalist. She has spent most of her career with CBS News, where she began as a producer in 1971. Since 1991, she has reported for CBS’s 60 Minutes. She is known for her news and television investigations, and award-winning foreign reporting. For her body of work she has earned various journalism awards including a Lifetime Achievement News and Documentary Emmy Award in 2003 for overall excellence in reporting.
