Organize Student Exchange Opportunities
Opening a World of Opportunity for Medical Students & Faculty in the U.S. and in India
If you are a faculty or administration member affiliated with one of our U.S. Medical Alliance institutions, we encourage you to consider organizing a student fellowship or faculty exchange program with the Christian Medical College of Vellore (CMC). This program offers an extraordinary opportunity to create cross-cultural learning experiences that open the eyes of its participants to a unique patient care model and fosters new relationships that last a lifetime.
CMC is one of the top three medical schools in all of India. CMC’s unique curriculum is built upon the Christian values of concern and compassion, cutting-edge facilities, and an expansive network of clinical affiliates. The holistic approach to patient care adopted by Dr. Ida S. Scudder more than a century ago still exists today. This means that CMC does not measure an applicant’s potential to make a meaningful contribution solely by his or her grades or standardized testing ability. Rather, it is always about one’s ability to adapt to and thrive in a culture that places empathy at the forefront of the patient-doctor interaction.
How It Works
As with each of our medical alliances, CMC is a hub of quality healthcare and education. CMC continuously attracts top clinical and research professionals from around the world. Some of the most exciting collaborative relationships at CMC are formed through formal exchanges with U.S. universities, which offer short-term medical, nursing and allied health study programs for CMC students, funded by our Honorine Ward Senior Training Fellowship Award.
Partnerships between CMC and U.S.-based medical institutions create opportunities for CMC faculty to travel to the U.S. for further study, visiting professorships, and collaborative research. Similarly, students and faculty from the U.S. are able to visit CMC for observation, study and/or research.
Testimonials From of our Most Active U.S. Medical Alliances
Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA
“Tufts now sends an average of 30 or 40 students a year to India to acquire the essentials of community medicine, at which our partners at Christian Medical College in Vellore, South India, are masters. We send students abroad not just to see tropical diseases they won’t see at home, but to learn what it’s like to take care of a population.”
-Dr. Harris Berman (former Dean of Tufts Medical School)
Weill Cornell Medical College, New York, NY
“We are trying to expand from a traditional focus on infectious disease to encompass other opportunities in a wide variety of locations, including public health aspects of global health. Our program at Weill Cornell seeks to provide an enriching experience in both developing and developed countries.”
– Dr. Madelon L. Finkel (Professor of Clinical Public Health and Director of the Office of Global Health)
University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Philadelphia, PA
“Mrs. Charles (Matron) said the pediatric unit is called something [that] translates loosely to ‘the place of hope’. After I visited the pediatric units ‘hope’ rang true. The medical team does not give up. Even if a child does not seem to be progressing as they would like, they don’t consider it a failure. Instead, they just encourage the parents to give it more time.”
– Visiting Nursing Student
University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, TX
“The CMC community is made up of an interesting and diverse group of people – students and faculty come from all over India and a number of other countries, such as Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Elective students and volunteer workers come from Australia, Britain, USA, Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, and New Zealand. This exchange among varied people and cultures is mutually beneficial.”
