2020 Annual Report Interview: Dr. Ankit Bharat

In his interview with Foundation Board Chair, Dr. Philip Ninan (Batch ‘69), Dr. Bharat discusses his aspiration to pursue innovation in service to humanity. Dr. Bharat serves as the Chief of Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Northwestern Medicine, where he performed the first double lung transplant on a COVID-19 patient.

ABOUT DR. ANKIT BHARAT

Chief of Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery, Northwestern Medicine

Dr. Ankit Bharat is a board-certified surgeon and serves as the Chief of Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Northwestern Medicine. He is also a Harold L. and Margaret N. Method Research Professor of Surgery and an associate professor of surgery (thoracic surgery) and medicine (pulmonary and critical care). His research is primarily focused on lung preservation, transplant immunology, and airway biology. He got his MBBS from Vellore Christian Medical College in 2003. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Washington University in general surgery. He was an intern and a resident in general and cardiothoracic surgery at Washington University in St. Louis’ Barnes Jewish Hospital.
