Lecture Series: “Leadership is a Series of Behaviors Rather than a Role for Heroes”

From the perspective of a woman who has spent her career on the academic side and in the clinical aspects of medicine, Dr. Raman speaks to the challenges and barriers often faced by women who have aspirations to rise to the top of their field –regardless of their chosen profession. Her personal testimonies regarding the trials and tribulations of balancing a career with family life speak to the heart of the challenges faced by many women who have chosen a similar path.


Dr. Raman also shares her childhood connection to Dr. Ida Scudder, which led her to pursue a career in medicine.

After nearly sixty years, CMC has academically realigned its Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Institute with the internally acclaimed Rusk Rehabilitation Institute of New York City. A relationship that was launched on September 1st brings back memories of the days when Dr. Mary Verghese, who worked under the tutelage of Dr. Howard Rusk in New York for 18 months, returned to Vellore to introduce rehabilitative medicine to India for the first time.

The event “Crisis Negotiation: from Death Grip to Open Hands” was hosted by the Vellore CMC Foundation during Eastertide. Our guest lecturer, Dr. Julia Wattacheril, Director of the Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Program, Associate Professor of Medicine, Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation, Columbia University-NY Presbyterian Hospital, spoke about the fact that God can pour “New wine into new wineskins, Mark 7:22” during a crisis.
