As part of its 75th Anniversary Celebration, the Vellore Christian Medical College (CMC) Foundation invites you to join us on Friday, June 23rd at 10:00 AM EDT for part 3 of the Foundation’s 3-part series on CMC’s commitment to excellence in healthcare. The third lecture in this series “How CMC’s Community Outreach Services are Impacting the Health and Well-Being of India” will be presented by Dr. John “Johnny-O” Oommen, Honorary Consultant for Christian Hospital Bissamcuttack (Odisha) and Vice Chairman of the CMC Vellore Council and Association.
Community health and outreach endeavors through CMC date back to the “Roadside Clinics” initiated by CMC’s founder Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder more than 100 years ago. Through the Department of Community Health and Development (CHAD) and the Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA), CMC continues Dr. Ida’s legacy by bringing holistic care along with physical and spiritual healing to communities where the marginalized, uneducated, and poorest of the poor reside.
Besides serving as a source of primary healthcare and early prevention, CMC aims to build sustainable communities and improve feelings of dignity, community-mindedness, and self-sufficiency in each of its outreach program locations. CMC has received the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ) Award and the Platinum SKOCH Award for excellence in “Social Inclusion”. Dr. John Oommen will highlight and elaborate on CMC’s successful community health programs as an inspiration and exemplar model for public health initiatives across India.
Dr John Cherian Oommen has lived and worked at the Christian Hospital, Bissamcuttack in Rayagada District of South Odisha for more than 30 years. Here he has led the Madsen’s Institute for Tribal and Rural Advancement (MITRA) Community Health team, served as Medical Superintendent, and helped run this 200-bed hospital. Dr. Oommen’s strong affiliations with CMC started at an early age as his father was a Chaplain at CMC and he grew up as a “campus kid”. He is a CMC alumnus from the Batch of ‘79 and did his post-graduate training in Community Medicine. He is also a consultant to the Government of Odisha, especially in the capacity of Community Health and Tribal Education. Dr. Oommen is a member of multiple scientific advisory committees of the Indian Council of Medical Research and Editor of the Christian Medical Association of India.
