The Vellore Christian Medical College Foundation marked Women’s History Month with a virtual Lecture Presentation titled “How Empowered Women are Transforming Societies.” During the event, Guest Presenter Ms. Neidonuo Angami shared a moving account of her journey. Witnessing violence as a young girl fueled her determination to facilitate healing in both herself and society. Like Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, the Founder of Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore, Ms. Angami, a woman of Christian faith, persevered in her mission despite challenges. Hailing from the Kohima district in Nagaland, India, where armed conflicts have endured for over seven decades, Neidonuo’s peacebuilding initiatives through the Naga Mothers Association centered on promoting forgiveness, trust, and reconciliation among the Nagas. Angami’s significant contributions as a Social Activist earned her the Padma Shree Award in 2000 from the Government of India and a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 2005.
In line with the Women’s History Month theme for 2024, “Invest in women: Accelerate progress.”, Ms. Angami highlighted the initiatives of The Naga Mothers Association. Their focus is on empowering mothers to address issues like drug trafficking, alcoholism, and HIV/AIDS, all while promoting sustainable communities. Ms. Angami urged us to find spiritual guidance through service and emphasized the importance of inspiring women to tap into their inner strength to ignite positive transformations within societies.
